One of the problems about living in a small 2 bedroom house is that much needed “me” work space doesn’t exist. For my calligraphy projects for college, I’ll spread out all my paraphernalia out on the dining room table so that I have more space to work. I’ll need to have my laptop accessible for demonstrations, different types of paper, assorted pens, nibs and inks, and usually a nice cup of tea within arms reach. Oh, and one of the dogs will usually be curled up on the rug next to me too.
After I get my setup ready, I’ll turn on the TV and put a movie or a TV show on to help pass the time. Recent trends have me watching chick flicks, house related shows, Ghost Hunters, Mike Rowe, and yes, as a last resort, silly American Idol. I never really noticed the importance of what type of entertainment until the other night.
Gilday, who usually works in the office with his earbuds on, working feverishly on all things Finance, decided to take the night off and watch some TV. He finally settled on one of the many Die Hards that was playing on HBO. Something about a plane, that John guy’s wife taken hostage again, you know, the normal guy movie. When he initially turned the movie on, I thought that because it wasn’t the Die Hard with the guy from family matters that he’s seen so many freaking times, I’d be ok. Yeah, not so much. As I’m trying to write out the alphabet in 15th century Lombardic Gothic Capitols, I find that my writing style was becoming hard and deliberate instead of intuitive and flowing. As well as marking the page with ink, I was also marking the page with indents from the using the nib with such force.
Imagine my luck when after a half hour of listening to gun fire and Bruce Willis trying to negotiate with the bad guys, I hear snoring coming from the couch. It looked like good ol’ Gilday decided to take a nap. Yippee! Being the opportunistic person I am, I ever so quietly and strategically got the remote out of his hand and victoriously changed the channel. Imagine my surprise when something more fitting was playing, I was able to finish my homework with the ease of the natural my professor says I am in no time flat.
I started this post originally to talk about the show Ghost Hunters, and how its my new favorite show but went Way off topic. Oh well. Now I have something to talk about tomorrow!

I'll have you know that Reginald VelJohnson does appear in Die Hard II. I'm embarrassed for you.
